Bootleg City: Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh in '93
Mayor Matt Wardlaw takes us to the limit one more time
As a general rule, it is Jefitoblog policy to largely ignore Joe Walsh's solo career, tolerate Eagles records only in small doses, and treat all of Glenn Frey's solo output with all the derision and disdain it so richly deserves. But there are exceptions to every rule, especially when Mayor Matt Wardlaw gets in one of his moods — you know what a prick he can be — and starts loudly, petulantly demanding that we put one of his insufferable favorites on the sound system in the mayoral mansion. This happens with the Eagles in particular more than I would like to admit.
Fortunately, he isn't making us listen to both discs of Long Road Out of Eden today. Instead, he's coughed up a legitimate curiosity: A soundboard recording from the final night of Frey and Walsh's 1993 "Party of Two" tour, captured on July 18 in Westbury, NY. I don't mind telling you that until today, I had no idea this tour even happened, but lord help me, I'm kind of interested in hearing these performances, given that they took place in the in-between period when the Eagles were edging toward the reunion no one thought would ever happen. This is also right around the time Walsh got sober, which means you're either hearing him toward rock bottom or on his way back up — either way, there's all sorts of fascinating potential.
All of which is to say that we have to give the Mayor his props for this week's offering. It does not absolve him from his generally tyrannical behavior, nor does it change the fact that we are currently in the midst of reupholstering the furniture in the mayoral den because he decided to hide several boxes' worth of loose Pop-Tarts under the couch cushions and then forgot they were there. Still, we must give credit where credit is due. Enjoy this show! (Pro tip: I suspect you'll enjoy it a whole lot more if you skip the loathsome "Sexy Girl.")
