My Favorite Songs of 2024

I liked a lot of songs this year, and I brought you a playlist to prove it

A year in songs

Howdy, folks! I hope the holidays were good to you (or, if you're still celebrating, I hope the season continues to do you right). I know many of us are still in that liminal space between the warm glow of late December and the depressing gloom of early January, and that's definitely the case here at Jefitoblog HQ, where family plans will continue to dominate scheduled programming through the remainder of the week.

That being said, this is called the holiday season for a reason, and no matter how crowded my calendar might be, I still have time for you. Nearly 30 hours of time, if you want to get specific — I decided to round up all the newly released songs I liked in 2024, and this big ol' playlist is the result.

Pretty much every playlist comes with a caveat around here, and this one's no different. I skipped anything that wasn't actually released in 2024, regardless of whether or not I discovered it this year or how often I ended up playing it. I also tried to avoid multiple appearances by any given artist. As a result, this isn't technically my soundtrack for 2024, but it's pretty close. And with more than 500 songs on the list, I feel like "pretty close" is close enough.

As was the case for many if not most of you, I experienced some major ups and downs in 2024, and the lows were low enough that I won't exactly be sorry to see the year end. (Again, as is the case for many if not most of you, I'm also eyeing 2025 with extreme trepidation, but let's cross rickety bridges when we come to them.) Along the way, I listened to a ton of great music — so much, in fact, that looking back on it now is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I feel awfully fortunate to have been able to cram all this good stuff into my earholes, but on the other hand, how can anybody hope to explore new releases and meaningfully engage with them when there's just... so... much?

There will probably come a time when I no longer feel motivated to spend so much time listening to new music, and instead content myself with seeking out older releases I missed and/or revisiting records I already love. In the meantime, here's a little extra proof that when people complain there isn't any good music anymore, they're completely full of shit. I hope you make some pleasant new discoveries in this playlist — and if I missed any of your favorite new songs from 2024, definitely let me know in the comments.

I plan on being back tomorrow with a post covering my favorite new albums of the year. 'Til then!
