New Music Friday: 3/15/24
Keep your Spotify close, but your New Music Friday closer
Here are the rules: I listen to all 100 tracks of Spotify's New Music Friday playlist, except for anything that rhymes the n-word with itself more than three times, any screamo or screamo-adjacent stuff, any CCM that reveals its true intentions in time for me to hit the skip button, and any egregiously corny modern country music, typically performed by a dude with two first names. Having sifted through this week's playlist, here's what I actively enjoyed:
"One Last Dance," Baby Rose featuring BadBadNotGood
Well, this was a nice surprise. I apparently liked one of the tracks from Baby Rose's 2020 release Golden Hour, but I have no memory of it, which is yet another sign that I need to keep finding ways to actively listen to more things. Anyway, "One Last Dance" hit me like a transmission from a brilliant, brand new artist, and I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest of Slow Burn, the EP Baby Rose is releasing with BadBadNotGood next month. "One Last Dance" sounds to me like what might have happened if pieces of Toni Childs and Cold Specks were used to create a singer-songwriter — this is haunting stuff, lovely and lyrical and led by a soothing call-and-response between Rose's striking vocal and what I assume is Leland Whitty's flute. Every so often, NMF throws you a really wonderful curveball, and this is a fine example of that.
